Dinner in honor of President and Mrs. Bush

Monsieur Le Président, Chère Laura,

Mesdames les Ministres,

Mesdames et Messieurs les Parlementaires,

Messieurs les Ambassadeurs,

Mesdames et Messieurs,

Je vais d’abord dire un mot à nos amis Français, en leur souhaitant la bienvenue de la part de Debbie et moi-même.

Le Président et Madame Bush sont très heureux de leur présence ici ce soir pour ce dîner informel et amical et les en remercient.

Et maintenant, si vous le permettez, je vais poursuivre en anglais.

It is wonderful to have you with us tonight.  Today, our two Presidents held important talks covering the most difficult issues and situation of the planet that we are working effectively to settle.  Laura just returned from Afghanistan and reported and encouraged the Afghanistan support meeting held on Thursday.

Today, we inaugurated the magnificent Jean Cardot sculpture, La Flamme de la Liberté.  It is the first time ever two Presidents have inaugurated a monument together.

I will ask my friend Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière, my co-author of this project to give a liberal translation.

Finally, I would like to tell President Bush and Laura, how proud Debbie and I have been to represent the United States and serve as your Ambassador in France.
