The Embassy promotes careers for girls

November 16-17, 2009

To promote science careers for girls and set aspirations high, the Embassy programmed target-of-opportunity speaker Susan Marie Frontczak to lead discussions and perform her one-person show about the achievements of Marie Curie. Frontczack appeared at three schools in the Paris region, reaching a total of 700 students. Workshops on Marie Curie life, career and scientific experiments and research took place at Lycée Jacques Brel from the underserved area of La Courneuve (250 students), as well as in the Ecole Nationale de Physique, Chimie and Biologie (ENCPB) of Paris (150 students). A play "Manya: a living history and a visit with Madame Curie" took place in the municipal theater of Fontainebleau; Lycée Uruguay in Avon; middle school students from Collège Lucien Cézard, in Fontainebleau; and Collège Denecourt in Bois-le-roi. A total of 300 students attended this event as well as their teachers (History-Geography, English and Sciences) and city officials.
These programs were followed by sessions of questions and answers.
Susan Marie Frontczak effectively communicated the message that women can make great achievements in science and shared the message of President Obama that good study habits are the way forward.
