"Day of Hope" Ship visit to Marseille

April 18, 2006

The USS Carter Hall will visit Marseille April 18-22, 2006 and will sponsor a “Day of Hope” ship visit on April 19 for children of the region. Children referred by the Red Cross and living in several foster homes will tour the ship and chat with the sailors and marines. Up to 100 children from the Red Cross and the Concorde, Abri, Caravelle, Clairiere et Regain and Delta Sud homes are expected to participate.

The “Day of Hope” is organized by the United States Navy and the Navy League of Provence. It is supported by the U.S. Consulate General in Marseille, the Mairie of Marseille, the French Navy in Marseille and McDonald’s. McDonald’s is sponsoring snacks and t-shirts for the children.

For several years, the Navy League of Provence has organized ship visits and “Days of Hope” to promote Franco-American friendship and to expose children to new horizons, while bringing a smile to their faces. The Navy League of Provence has operated in Marseille for the past 15 years. It is a member of the non-profit United States Navy League, which was founded in 1902. Provence volunteers work to welcome ship visits to France from the American 6th Fleet and arrange meetings and excursions for the crews to learn about the political, social, economic, cultural, academic, religious and artistic aspects of Provence.

The USS Carter Hall, put in service in 1995, is home based at the Naval Amphibious Base in Little Creek, Virginia. It is a “Landing Ship, Dock,” designed to sail to the site of an amphibious landing, carrying and launching boats directly from its deck. It can also act as an offshore repair dock for damaged ships and amphibious craft.
