Passports
Emergency Passport Cases
The U.S. Embassy will consider your passport application in an emergency situation in the following cases:
A. Your passport was lost, stolen or mutilated;
B. Your request is due to a sudden, unexpected occurrence or relates to an unexpected event, such as a death in the family or a medical problem;
C. Your emergency situation does not meet the above criteria but is severe enough to warrant emergency action.
You should make an online appointment for the next business day. The U.S. Embassy in Paris will consider your application weekdays, except on French and American holidays. Note: customers without appointments may be seen after applicants with appointments.
If all appointments for that day are taken, the U.S. Embassy will accept your application on a walk-in basis. Please come into the waiting room of the Consular Section between:
8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., May through September,
8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., October through April.
If you require same-day issuance, please come as early as possible since we cannot guarantee that we can provide a passport before the end of the day if you arrive after 11:00 a.m.
If you must re-schedule your flight because of a lost or stolen passport, you should make your new reservations for the day after your visit. We cannot guarantee that we can issue a passport in time for same-day travel.
For all non-emergency passport cases requiring a personal appearance, you must schedule an online appointment.
If you are eligible to apply for an emergency passport please submit all of the following:
- Your current passport (except for lost, stolen or mutilated documents);
- Proof of international travel within the next 10 days;
- Two recent U.S. passport size photographs;
- Your social security number;
- Appropriate passport application Form DS-11 (Do not sign this document in advance.)
- A credit card or cash (dollars or euros) to pay the passport fee of $135 (see fees and payment methods.)
- If applying for minors under age 16, please refer to this website page.
If your application is approved, a limited validity passport for imminent travel will be issued on the day of your appointment. You are required to replace this passport when you complete your travel. You will not be issued another emergency passport until this passport is replaced. We therefore encourage you to replace your emergency passport immediately upon your return.
Tips to Expedite Your Passport Application
Forms
For faster service, we recommend you complete all passport application forms online and print them out for your signature. When printing out the form, please note that only one-sided pages of the application form are accepted.
You may also submit a typewritten or printed form. Please print legibly using black ink.
Note that the online version of the application form includes instructions on the back side written for use in the U.S. only. These instructions do NOT apply to your application in France. Please follow specific instructions provided on this webpage.
Passport Photographs
U.S. passport photos are significantly different from other types of passport photos. French photo booth photographs are NOT acceptable for U.S. passport issuance. We recommend you obtain photos per the indications on the list of photographers. Computer scanned images may not be accepted. All photos must have a white background.
