Documents Required for Visa Applications

Depending on the type of visa that you are applying for, certain supporting documentation is required:

Visa Class

Students (F visa)

Form I-20 and SEVIS Receipt, as well as evidence of ability to pay costs listed on Form I-20

Exchange Visitors (J visa)

DS-2019, DS-7002 (interns and trainees), and SEVIS Receipt, as well as evidence of ability to pay costs listed on DS-2019

Temporary Workers (H visa), Artists, Athletes and Entertainers (O  and P visas )

Form I-797 (original or copy)

Intercompany Transferee (L visa)

Form I-797 (original or copy)

Three signed copies of Form I-129S (Blanket L1 Applicants only)

Diplomats and Officials (A, G or NATO visas)

Diplomatic Note

Treaty Trader / Treaty Investor (E visas)

Form DS-156E

Crewmembers (B1 or C1/D visa)

A personnel letter verifying details of employment

Journalists (I visa)

Personnel letter and/or Employment Contract. Press card.

Business or Pleasure (B1/B2)

While there are no specifically required documents for a B1/B2 application, consular officer frequently request to see documents supporting claims of employment (work contract and pay stubs), financial status (bank statements), and purpose of travel. There is no formula; applicants should bring appropriate and persuasive documentary evidence to the interview to support claims made in the application. Applicants who do not have documentation requested by the consular officer may be asked to provide it via email.
