Passport Services

The U.S. Consulate General in Marseille offers a full range of passport services to U.S. citizens.  Most passport renewals are made by mail. Certain passport applications require a personal appearance by appointment. If applicable, please call 04 91 54 90 84 to schedule an appointment.

For all applications requiring a personal appearance, Consular Services are currently available in Marseille, Tuesday and Wednesday by appointment, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., except on French and U.S. holidays.

A. Passport Renewal By Mail for Adults Holding a 10-Year Validity Passport Issued within the Last 15 Years

B. Passport Amendments by Mail - Change of Legal Name

1) If the biographical data page needs to be corrected within one year of passport issuance, submit:

  • Completed, signed and dated form DS-5504;
  • Current passport;
  • Original documentation stating legal name change (marriage certificate, divorce decree, etc.);
  • A self-addressed Chronopost envelope for the return of your new and cancelled old passport(s).  Please allow 2 to 3 weeks for receipt of your new passport;
  • There is no charge for this service. 

 

2) If changes are required after one year of passport issuance, please follow the instructions and payment procedures for renewals for adults or minors and pay applicable fee.

C. Additional Visa pages

Visa pages may be added to valid passports that are in good condition free of charge: please send the original passport; completed, signed and dated form DS-4085, and a self-addressed Chronopost envelope. There is no charge for this service. Turn-around times are subject to receipt of applications and Chronopost delivery times; usually 1 to 2 weeks. 

D. Passport Issuance in Person for Children under 16

For renewals of passports for minor children please make an appointment. Each minor child shall appear in person and provide appropriate documentation. Both parents’ consent and signatures are mandatory for passport issuance for minors under 16. Either both parents accompany the child, or one parent accompanies the child, and the non-applying parent submits a notarized Form DS-3053, Statement of Consent: Issuance of a Passport to a Minor Under Age 16 (see http://france.usembassy.gov/pass-under16.html for more information) and a copy of their identification.

At the time of your appointment, submit child's:

*Important note: If a normally acceptable document of identity was issued so long ago that it is no longer clearly identifiable of the applicant, such as an old U.S. passport presented by an adult with the photo of an infant or very young child, you must bring in additional, more recent identification.  

Family photos to show the child in the previous passport is identifiable with the applicant are useful in this regard.

 
  • Original U.S. birth certificate or, certified, sealed U.S. birth certificate or, Consular Report of Birth Abroad;
  • Both parents signed photo identification: a passport or ID card;
  • Child’s social security number;
  • A credit card or cash to pay the correct fee ($85);
  • A self-addressed Chronopost envelope for the return of the new passport;
  • Please allow 2 to 3 weeks for receipt of your new passport.

 

E. Persons over 16 with 5-year validity passports do not need parental signatures in most cases.

At the time of your appointment, please submit:

  • Completed form DS-11, do NOT sign this document;
  • Current passport;
  • Fee ($100).
  • A self-addressed Chronopost envelope for the return of the new passport.
  • Please allow 2 to 3 weeks for receipt of your new passport.

 

F. Lost, Stolen or Mutilated Passport Replacements

At the time of your appointment you must submit:

Proof of identity and proof of U.S. Citizenship

  • Proof of identity is a photo ID, such as a U.S. or French driver’s license; older or expired IDs such as student ID or previous licenses are useful if current ones are not available;
  • Proof of citizenship is an original, sealed birth certificate with a filing number, an original Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a previous U.S. passport;
  • Completed form DS-11, do NOT sign this document;
  • Completed and signed form DS-64;
  • Any other identification: driver’s license and if possible a copy of passport, or birth certificate;
  • Social security number;
  • A credit card or cash (dollars or euros) to pay the correct fee;
  • If your travel plans are imminent your passport will be issued within 2 to 3 hours. However, if you are not traveling within 2 to 3 weeks from the time of your personal application, please submit a self-addressed Chronopost envelope for the return of your new passport.

G. Imminent Departure

If you have an expired U.S. passport, and you need a new passport for imminent travel within the next week your passport application will require a personal appearance. If your travel plans are not imminent please renew your passport using the by-mail procedure. At the time of your appointment you will need to submit:

  • Current passport;
  • Proof of international travel;
  • Your social security number;
  • Either a DS-82 passport application (if you have a full validity, 10 year validity passport issued within the past 15 years that is not mutilated in any way) or;
  • A DS-11 passport application for all others (do NOT sign the DS-11 form);
  • A credit card or cash (dollars or euros) to pay the correct fee: $75 for adults over 16 ― $85 for children under 16 ― $100 for first passports.

On the day of your appointment, if eligible, you will be issued a limited validity passport for imminent travel. You will be required to replace this passport by mail when you complete your travel by using the form DS-5504. You will not be issued another emergency, limited validity passport until the emergency passport is replaced by a full validity 10 year passport. We therefore encourage you to replace your emergency passport as soon as possible. If it is replaced during its 1 year date of validity, you will not be charged for the 10-year validity passport.

If you are not eligible to receive a limited validity emergency passport, a new 10-year validity passport will be issued in 3 weeks time from the date of application. To this purpose you must submit a self-addressed, Chronopost envelope. 

H. First Time Passport Issuance

For children under 16, please refer to specific requirements on page http://france.usembassy.gov/pass-under16.html 

For first time issuance for adults please refer to http://france.usembassy.gov/first_passports.html

 

At the time of your appointment, submit:

  • Completed form DS-11, do NOT sign this document;
  • Original U.S. birth certificate or, certified, sealed U.S. birth certificate or, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or if applicable a naturalization certificate;
  • For children under 16, both parents’ signed photo ID or,
  • For adults, one signed photo identification card;
  • Social security number if applicable;
  • A credit card or cash (dollars or euros) to pay the correct fee ($85 for children under 16 - $100 for all others);
  • A self-addressed Chronopost envelope for the return of your new passport.
  • Please allow 2 to 3 weeks for receipt of your new passport.

J. Important general information for application forms, fees and photos in Marseille

Application Forms

We recommend you complete all passport application forms online and print them out for your signature. You may also submit a type written or printed form. Please print legibly using black ink.  When printing out the form, please note that only one-sided pages of the application form are accepted.

Note that the online version of the application form includes instructions on the backside written for use in the U.S. only. These instructions do not apply to your application in France. Please follow specific instructions provided on this webpage.

Passport Photographs

U.S. passport photos are significantly different from other types of passport photos. French photo booth photographs are NOT acceptable for U.S. passport issuance. We recommend you obtain photos per the indications on the following list of photographers.

Security at the U.S. Consulate in Marseille

For security reasons, do not bring luggage -- including large backpacks -- laptop computers, or large cameras. Security guards will hold small tourist cameras and cell phones until your departure, but there is no storage available for luggage, large backpacks, laptop computers, or large cameras -- please do not bring them to the Consulate.
