Claude Fauquet and Marc Baron Van Montagu, pioneer in plant molecular biology.
Program with Dr. Fauquet from the Donald Danforth Center
March 1-5, 2010
Public Affairs and the Agricultural section organized a 5-day program for Dr. Claude M. Fauquet, an expert in food security and agricultural development in African countries and a researcher in plant biotechnology at the Donald Danforth Center. His visit was funded under the State Department biotech outreach program; it took place March 1-5, at the same time as the Salon de l’Agriculture in order for him to meet a wide range of contacts among farmer groups, the food industry, and the media. He also visited laboratories in Montpellier on Plant Development and Genetic Improvement, gave three conferences to students, academics and scientific experts, and met lengthily with a counselor to the Minister of Ecology. Dr Fauquet stressed to all audiences that the global food security issue can be partially addressed by plant biotechnology. Due to his expertise and effective presentation style, he was able to move the dial on this sensitive topic.
