Networking session for museums directors of institutions linked to human rights, slavery and memory
September 4, 2009
The Public Affairs section organized a networking session in Paris for museum directors of institutions linked to human rights, slavery, and memory, to share best practices with John W. Franklin, Director of International Programs for the National Museum of African American History. The French participants expressed strong interest in the American experience on the subject of museums of conscience. The discussion ranged from techniques for presenting and teaching about memory, to the difficulties faced by museums broaching the topic of slavery and colonization. Mr. Franklin planted seeds for a more extensive high level seminar to be organized in the spring of 2010.
