The US Embassy presents a traveling exhibit on American quilts: "A Patchwork of Cultures: A Traveling Exhibit from Louisiana to France"

April 18, 2008

This traveling exhibit of modern American quilts will travel throughout France from April 2008 to the summer of 2009. It is organized in partnership with the City of Lafayette, LA, France Patchwork Association, France Louisiane-France Américanie and the historic quilt shop Le Rouvray that introduced quilting in France. This collection of 25 quilts will showcase two aspects of contemporary American culture and craftwork: 12 quilts, selected from an original exhibit curated for Lafayette commemorations in Lafayette LA last year, will portray Franco-American friendship and 13 more quilts will portray the African-American tradition of quilting, mostly unknown in France. Quilting workshops will be organized during each exhibit in collaboration with France Patchwork association. The first exhibit opened in Angoulême, Charente, at the Regional Center for Disabled People (Maison départementale des personnes handicapées) in presence of US Consul in Bordeaux Kenneth Forder last April 18.
