Ambassador Stapleton, Cyrano de Bergerac, and the Cognac Blues Passions Festival
July 28-August 1, 2006
Between July 28 and August 1 Ambassador Stapleton visited the region of Cognac and the Cote Basque. In the city of Cognac, he attended the Cognac Blues Passions festival, visited the ‘Landmarks of New York’ exhibit in the City Museum, and stopped in at Hennessy and the American-owned Courvoisier cognac houses. During his visit, Ambassador Stapleton met with local mayors, the prefect, and the press, which covered each step of his visit. In the Pays Basque, the Ambassador met with the Chamber of Commerce in Bayonne, visited the Musee Basque and met the general public in two typical Basque villages in a more rural area. In St. Jean de Luz, Ambassador Stapleton visited Quiksilver, the most important American company in the region, made a stop at Arnaga (the home of Edmond Rostand, the author of Cyrano de Bergerac), and was guest of honor at a luncheon hosted by Senateur-Maire Borotra of Biarritz with other local officials and authorities.
